Tenants in pensioner flats owned by Auckland City are facing rent increases of up to 33 per cent.
On the second day of a three-day budget meeting yesterday, Auckland city councillors voted to increase the rent for bedsit flats from $60 a week to $80 as part of efforts to save about $7 million a year.
Community Services Committee chairman Graeme Mulholland said tenants would be eligible for an accommodation supplement from Work and Income New Zealand.
The council has decided that pensioner housing is not a core council function, and plans to sell its 1600 pensioner flats as they become vacant.
