A large building fire at a machinery sales yard in Rolleston has been put out.
About nine engines were sent to the fire at Diggalink on the intersection of Weedons Ross Rd and State Highway 1 in Canterbury, at 10.20am.
Crews are still dampening down hotspots and a fire investigator is heading to the property to determine a cause.
A witness told the Herald the fire was in a shed at the Diggalink site.
"It is a relatively new shed that hasn't been up all that long, and I would assume it was storing stuff like diesel and grease and all sorts of other inflammable material," he said.
"It had a lot of flames, but the wind was blowing in the wrong direction for it to spread too far.
"There is a lot of smoke and I assume there will be for quite a while."
He believed that fire was "well and truly contained" and brigades from Sockburn, Rolleston, Lincoln and West Melton were in attendance.
