It's looking like another hot and dry weekend across most of the country as a front that dumped some heavy rain weakens as it moves north.
Timaru experienced surface flooding after 36.8mm of rain was recorded at the airport between yesterday morning and midnight.
Other parched areas, including Christchurch and Wellington, also got a small amount of rain, 12.6mm and 10mm respectively.
About 32mm fell in the Rimutaka Ranges and up to 35mm was recorded at the Tararuas. Masterton received 15mm.
In Kaikoura, 35.8mm fell and Mahia received most of its 13.8mm in one hour from 4am today.
The rain and showers continue for Hawke's Bay today but MetService duty meteorologist Philippa Murdoch said it will clear.
Gisborne can expect rain today after receiving up to 18mm in the ranges and 8mm in town. Niwa recorded 45 lightning strikes in a five-minute period yesterday afternoon.
Two fronts skimmed the east and west coasts of the North Island this morning, but it will be fine by the time those in the west start to make their way to work today.
Unfortunately the showers that hit western areas, including Taranaki, Waikato and Auckland were nothing significant but enough to water the parched gardens of many Kiwis.
Showers will hang around the east coast of the South Island this morning before it clears and a new ridge of high pressure builds over the country.
Tomorrow, there will just be a few showers in the deep south, where Fiordland and Southland get more rain. Everywhere else remains fine.
The weekend will also be fine in most areas before a front hits the south on Sunday and makes its way up the country, hitting the North Island on Monday, Murdoch said.
