Police have released an identikit image of the offender they say stabbed a man in Ponsonby on Friday night.
Auckland City Detective Sergeant Mark Greaves said the victim was stabbed in the chest during an altercation on Franklin Rd about 10.15pm.
Franklin Rd was busy at the time with people viewing the street's famous Christmas lights. Police cordoned off the top part of the street after the assault.
The victim received serious injuries and was hospitalised in a serious condition after the assault
The incident occurred between Arthur and Heke Sts.
No arrests have been made and police are seeking information from witnesses.
The offender is described as a Caucasian in his early 20s or 30s, of chubby build and about 175cm tall.
