The victim of a crash between a motorcycle and a ute in Taupo yesterday has been named by police as Benjamin Allan Biddle.
The 32-year-old local man died from his injuries at the scene on State Highway 1 at Motutere, despite efforts of people at the scene to save him.
Emergency services were called about 6.50pm.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause and looking into whether speed and alcohol were factors.
However, initial inquiries indicated Biddle's northbound motorcycle crossed the centre line and collided with the ute, which was heading south.
The road and weather conditions at the time were fine.
One lane of the road was closed for about three hours while a scene examination was conducted.
Taupo area road policing manager Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said the incident was a tragedy that would change Christmas for a number of people.
Yesterday, police launched an alcohol harm-prevention operation with the NZ Transport Agency called "We want you home for Christmas".
Troy said police encourage all road users to be courteous and patient, especially when traffic was congested.
"Drive to the conditions, and do not drive if you're tired or if you've been drinking.
"We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Christmas with your families, and that starts with your journeys on our roads."
