Strong winds are expected to hit the North Island.
MetService has issued a severe weather watch for Sunday, with gale force winds up to 85km/h to hit most of the North Island.
Winds are expected to affect Taranaki out to the Coromandel, and Auckland, with MetService meteorologist Andy Best saying he "doesn't expect it to be nice anywhere in the North Island" on Sunday.
Periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected as well.
WeatherWatch said a developing low, which is connected to a system in the Southern Ocean, will move off the South Island's West Coast on Sunday and into the North Island.
Localised heavy rainfall was forecast for the North Island.
Thunderstorms would also be expected to push into the western and central parts of the North Island.
"Short duration" heavy rainfall of 10-30mm/h were expected in Auckland on Sunday morning, and into the Bay of Plenty and Hawke's Bay early tomorrow afternoon.
The bad weather would continue in the North Island until Monday morning.
Meanwhile, wind gusts of up 85km/h are expected for some parts of the South Island from Sunday afternoon, mainly affecting Southland.
