A witness has described a chaotic scene with "blood everywhere" after a car hit a pedestrian in Petone last night.
Police confirmed there had been an incident outside the Petone Working Men's Club on Udy St, in which a 90-year-old man suffered moderate injuries.
"Early indications are that a man was struck by a vehicle, but inquiries will be made to establish the cause of the incident," a police spokesman said.
The witness said the club was packed that night when the accident happened about 9.30pm.
"It had just happened when we walked out the doors."
His understanding was that a car was reversing out and hit the entrance of the building, striking one person.
"A lot of people were shaken up," he said.
"There was a lot of blood on the ground, they were hosing it off."
The witness said he saw two people brought into the building in blankets. He believed they might have been the occupants of the car but did not know for certain.
"They were just like white as ghosts."
He said there would have been hundreds of people in the club and plenty of people milling about outside when it happened.
