Mak Aulakh was fast asleep when a car came flying through the garden and smashed into the side of his rented house this morning.
Taupo Senior Constable Tony Ellis said the black Mercedes had come along Gillies Ave, which runs at right angles to Rifle Range Rd, hit a kerb and then continued at speed through a low concrete fence, across a garden and into the side of a house.
He said it appeared the driver, a 55-year-old man from Tokoroa, had suffered a medical event.
The driver was taken to Taupo Hospital as a precaution but was thought to be uninjured.
The car was badly damaged and a window and door were broken on the house. An outside air-conditioning unit had been totally destroyed.
Aulakh, who was sleeping in the room next to where the car hit the house says he awoke with a start when he heard a bashing noise. The window of his bedroom broke and there was glass and bricks on the floor.
He went outside to the driveway, turned off the car and helped the driver out.
The house owner was at the property inspecting the damage but did not want to comment.
Emergency services were sent to the corner of Rifle Range Rd and Gillies Ave about 8.30am.
