A Tauranga rescue helicopter was dispatched last night after a report of an alleged assault.
At 9.30pm on Saturday the Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was sent to Matakana Island where a 32-year-old Tauranga man had fallen heavily, hitting his head on concrete.
He was knocked unconscious for some time.
The man was stabilised by the helicopter's onboard St John medic before being flown to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.
The flight was carried out with the use of Night Vision equipment.
Police are investigating the incident, after they responded to a report that "a man was assaulted and knocked out".
A Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokeswoman said the man was discharged early on Sunday morning, and did not have any further information.
