Four people have died after a horror car crash in Waikato tonight.
Two others were transported to Waikato Hospital. One is now in a critical condition in intensive care and the other is serious and in a high-dependency unity. A Waikato DHB spokeswoman said they are in their 30s.
Two cars were involved in the crash, which happened at 7.40pm.
Police said State Highway 2, Netherton, in the Hauraki District, was closed between Fisher Rd and School Rd. It has since been reopened.
Fire crews were at the scene from 7.45pm until almost 4am.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
Fog in the area is heavy and police are urging motorists to drive with caution.
Four more people died in three crashes from late Friday night to early Saturday afternoon.
On Friday night a Gisborne woman died after she was hit by a car on Cobden St, in the city.
Emergency services were called just after 11pm. The driver and passenger have been helping police with their inquiries.
Two young men died and another was badly injured after a crash at Dairy Flat, north of Auckland about 1am.
Police said two cars collided between Bawden Rd and Postman Rd. The two occupants of one car were killed and the only occupant of the other car was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.
And a woman died in a crash in the Far North at 12.30pm.
The crash happened on SH10 at Kaingaroa, north of Kaitaia. Two children in the same car were injured.
