An Air New Zealand plane that earlier declared at emergency has landed safely at Hamilton Airport.
Passsengers have spoken of circling for an hour above Hamilton Airport as they waited for emergency services to arrive.
Maria Lute of Wellington said the plane left Wellington 8.30am before stopping in Palmerston North for about 20 minutes.
"They said the front nose wheel came down and then went back up again and they couldn't get it down so they got on the phone to all their technicians. They said that sometimes it happens with that plane.
"So we had to keep on going round and round and round and round, it seemed like we were up there for an hour."
Once the plane landed, passengers were ushered to the Koru Lounge, where St John Ambulance checked that passengers didn't experience any heart palpitations.
"They were all very nice; the pilot was very affable and chatty."
Lute wasn't sure what the delay was at first, initially thinking it was fog before then finding out about a possible issue with the landing wheel.
Hamilton Airport chief executive Mark Morgan says the pilot radioed in with a possible issue with the landing gear on Flight NZ8242, which was arriving from Wellington after a stopover in Palmerston North.
Morgan says the pilot retracted the landing gear and put it down again and the fault no longer registered.
However, the pilot waited for emergency services to arrive at the airport as a precaution.
An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said an indicator suggested a possible issue with the landing gear, but the gear worked properly and the problem may have been the light itself.
"The captain took a conservative approach and requested emergency services be on standby for the landing as a precaution," the airline said.
The Q300 plane will now be inspected by engineers.
