Two men armed with crowbars have been thwarted in an attempt to hold up a McDonald's restaurant near Auckland Airport and forced to flee empty-handed.

Staff at the 24-hour drive-thru on Tom Pearce Drive were threatened by the armed robbers who burst into the fast-food restaurant demanding cash.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darrell Harpur said the pair tried unsuccessfully to gain access to money held securely at the restaurant.

Having failed to get money they stole property from a staff member.

Harpur said the pair fled the scene in a vehicle.

No one was hurt in robbery.

Police were now reviewing security footage and following positive lines of inquiry.

A worker at the restaurant said it was temporarily closed while police investigated the robbery.
