One dead after house fire in Oamaru

A body has been pulled from a blazing house fire in Oamaru.

Two fire crews were called to the burning building on Test St, South Hill about 8.30am today.

Police have confirmed one person died in the fire and an investigation is under way.

Fire Service southern shift manager Andrew Norris said one person was found inside the blaze.

"The first crew to arrive was told someone was inside. The second crew were a couple of minutes behind them. One person has been located."

A passerby, who did not want to be named, said he tried to open several doors of the house when he noticed smoke, but was unable to.
