The man killed in a single car crash on State Highway 77 between Methven and Ashburton yesterday has been named.

He was 24-year-old Anthony Dennis Copperwheat.

Copperwheat was originally from the UK but was living in Methven, about an hour inland from Christchurch.

Police said he crashed into a power pole between Blands Rd and Thompsons Track at 3.30am on Sunday.

The Serious Crash Unit are investigating.

"Police extend their sympathies to Mr Copperwheat's whanau and friends," a spokeswoman said.
