One of the two people who died in a horrific crash near Nelson has been named.

Nelson man Stephen Anthony Jayes, 41, died when a car towing a caravan and a truck carrying scaffolding collided on the Coastal Highway, also known as State Highway 60, in the Redwood Valley yesterday. A third vehicle was also thought to be involved.

Five others were injured in the crash, about 25km west of Nelson about 11am.

Senior Sergeant Blair Hall said police wanted to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash and not already spoken to them.

Police were also seeking any footage of the crash before emergency services arrived.

"This crash has affected many families and our thoughts go out to these people. This was a very challenging scene and required a large, co-ordinated approach from emergency services and support agencies," Hall said.

The name of the second person will not be released until police have contacted the next of kin.
