A motorcyclist has died after hitting a fence on the Shenandoah Highway in the Tasman District.

Police said shortly after 8am emergency services including a rescue helicopter attended a crash involving a motorcyclist and a fence near Maruia in the Tasman District.

However the rider died at the scene.

Motorists are warned there will be delays while the scene is under examination.
