One person has died and two others are badly injured after a two-car crash near Waiuku, south of Auckland.

A St John spokesperson confirmed one person died in the 11am crash on Awhitu Rd, about 500m northwest of West Coast Rd.

Police confirmed the person who died was the sole occupant of one of the vehicles.

A woman in her 30s suffered serious injuries and another has moderate injuries.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported the woman, who was believed to be the driver of the car, to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesman said firefighters cut a trapped person out of one of the cars.

Diversions are in place from Awhitu Rd and Pollock Wharf Rd.

Police said there was no indication yet as to how the crash happened.

The serious crash unit will investigate.
