A Kaiapoi home has been extensively damaged by fire in a large blaze overnight.

Fire Service southern communications shift manager Andrew Norris said it took 20 firefighters about 90 minutes to extinguish the fire in the two-storey Kaiapoi property.

Crews from Kaiapoi and Woodend were called to the Sneyd St address just after 1am.

Fire quickly engulfed the home, which was extensively damaged.

The house was occupied but everyone managed to get out safely, he said.

Fire investigators would be returning to the house this morning to work out the cause of the blaze.
