The cyclist who died in collision with a truck on Awapuni Rd on Wednesday morning was 42-year-old Jason Duncan Houia of Gisborne.

Houia was riding his mountain bike on SH35 in Gisborne, when he struck the front of a truck opposite the speedway about 9am Wednesday.

Police said he died instantly.

"The circumstances of the collision were completely beyond the truck driver's control and he continues to be traumatised by what happened," said a spokesman for the police serious crash investigation.

"The driver continues to get help from Victim Support.

"So, too, do the family of Mr Houia," the spokesman said.

"We can make no further comment on the circumstances of the tragedy at this time because the matter is now in the hands of the coroner."
