Police were hunting a group of anonymous gunmen this afternoon after receiving reports of several men firing a rifle out a car window in Lower Hutt.

Police were unable to find the group of three or four males, who were said to have been driving a black car up and down Coast Rd in Wainuiomata while someone fired the gun.

The reports came in about 1.30pm, a police spokesman said.

Cordons were set up and area patrols conducted, but no vehicle was located.

The police units have since withdrawn.

The car was described as a "newer black four door car", the spokesman said.

Police found no evidence at the scene of shots having been fired.
