Police are appealing for witnesses to a Napier hit-and-run last week to come forward.
Police are continuing their investigation into the hit and run of a cyclist in Waterworth Avenue, Onekawa, last Friday morning.
Police have said there was an altercation between two men, after which a cyclist was hit by a car. The driver of the car immediately left the area.
On Saturday an arrest warrant was issued for Jamie Lesley Jones, 31, in relation to the incident.
The cyclist, Louis Keil, 49, of Napier, was transferred to Auckland earlier this week, having been in a critical condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital since Friday.
He is now in a serious but stable condition.
Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard said police believed a vehicle stopped to offer help to the man on the road and moved the bike to the footpath in the process.
"I'm asking that person to come forward and speak to us," he said.
Police are still searching for Jones, and ask anyone with information on his
whereabouts to come forward.
With Mr Keil a long-time Mongrel Mob member and Jones being linked to Black Power, worries that some gang friction could be revived were being dispelled, with sources telling Hawke's Bay Today that leaders regarded the incident as having been between two individuals and not a gang issue.
Detective Darren Pritchard said that while the gang connections had been a worry, those who police had spoken with had been co-operative and appeared keen for Jones to be apprehended or give himself up to police.
Jones was last year sentenced to three months' jail for reckless driving and other offences in a slow-speed, late-night chase with police as he drove a stolen vehicle around the streets of Napier on its rims for over an hour after police used road spikes in an attempt to stop the vehicle by blowing out its tyres.
