Lower Hutt shoppers won't be vying for a car park at Queensgate or the CBD this Christmas season, thanks to a free weekend shuttle service.

A bus will ferry shoppers between the Waterloo Station park and ride and the stop outside the courthouse on Laings Rd.

It will run in both directions, leaving every 15 minutes from 9am to 6pm on Saturdays and from 10am to 5.30pm on Sundays.

Greater Wellington Regional Council has set up the service.

Chief executive Greg Campbell said the Council hoped the shuttle would take the hassle out of Christmas shopping.

"With limited parking in the CBD and competition for spots, it's going to be so much easier to park at the station, jump on to a free bus and arrive unruffled at the centre of the shopping action."
