One person is trapped and others injured after a major crash in Wellington this morning.

A helicopter is on standby to ferry the injured to hospital after a truck and car collided on the Paremata Haywards Rd, closing a major route across the Wellington region.

Police said the crash happened just after 8am.

It was unclear how many people were in the vehicles but one person was reportedly trapped in the car and another injured, said a police spokeswoman.

A detour was place around the crash at Judgeford, near the intersection of Flightys Rd.

The New Zealand Travel Agency said motorists should use State Highway 1 and State Highway 2 while emergency services attended the crash.
