An attack in Kawakawa which left a German tourist with facial injuries has been called "disappointing" by Northland police.
Kerikeri Senior Sergeant Peter Robinson said the German tourist was staying in a campervan behind the Kawakawa post shop with another tourist when she was attacked just before midnight on Monday.
Mr Robinson said four young people - two girls and two boys - stole a backpack from the campervan. The woman managed to recover the backpack and was then physically assaulted before members of the public intervened.
"She's got some facial injuries as a result of punches to the face. She was given medical assistance. She's been offered help by Victim Support and is being supported by other tourists," he said.
Mr Robinson said the assault on the tourist was "disappointing".
"Police are always disappointed when this type of unprovoked attack happens as it may deter other tourists who want to visit Northland," he said.
No arrests have been made and Mr Robinson said anyone with information can contact Kerikeri police on 407 9211 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
