Fierce blaze damages Matakana automotive workshop

An overnight blaze has badly damaged an automotive shop in Matakana, north of Auckland.

Fire Service northern shift manager Carren Larking said fire crews from Auckland joined local volunteer brigades to put out a fierce blaze that ripped through a commercial property.

The building, in an industrial block of Matakana Valley Rd, housed a large automotive premises.

More than 10 fire crews, three water tankers and 13 supporting vehicles fought the fire.

She said the alarm was raised at 1.50am.

Crews from Avondale and Te Atatu had travelled north to bolster local volunteer brigades.

It took firefighters three hours to put out the blaze.

Fire safety officers were investigating the cause of the blaze.
