Man dies in Ahipara crash in Far North

A man has died in a single-car crash in Ahipara, south east of Kaitaia.

He was ejected from the car and was killed after the vehicle landed on top of him, a police spokesman said.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash, between Kaitaia-Awaroa and Brass Rds about 4.45pm.

The car had come "well off the road" near the bridge and was in a paddock, a police spokeswoman said.

The Serious Crash Unit was investigating.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said one ambulance was dispatched, but the man died at the scene.

Northern fire service communications shift manager Megan Ruru said two trucks arrived at the scene at 4.53pm.

Fire crews were liaising with police, Ruru said.

Diversions were in place at Brass, Kaitaia-Awaroa Rd, Brass Rd, Sandhills Rd and Clarke Rd.
