An elderly man has died at Lyttelton Harbour, though police cannot say yet what happened.
A police spokeswoman told Fairfax the man was pulled from the water.
However another spokeswoman told the Herald there were conflicting reports on whether or not the 77-year-old had actually been pulled from the water.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene, but he died, she confirmed.
It happened at Godley Quay about 10.15am.
There are no suspicious circumstances and the matter has been referred to the coroner.
