A state highway has reopened after a horror two-car crash tonight which left two people dead and one seriously injured.

A police spokeswoman said the crash happened on State Highway 2 at Rawiri Rd, near the Waikato settlement of Mangatawhiri just after 6pm.

Diversions were in place as emergency services tended to the seriously injured woman and the Serious Crash Unit began investigating. But the road had reopened by 11pm.

No other details were available on the deceased last night, the spokeswoman said.

A spokeswoman for St Johns said an ambulance was at the scene and the person with serious injuries had been airlifted to hospital.
