Car on fire in Ngaruawahia

A car has caught fire after an apparent explosion in Ngaruawahia.

The Fire Service attended the fire after they were called about 9pm.

A Fire Service spokesman said it took about 20 minutes to put the fire out.

A police spokeswoman said they were also in attendance assisting with traffic diversion, and that it happened at 8.50pm.

Neither could confirm what had caused the fire.

On social media, locals said the car "apparently blew up", and one said they heard a "massive bang" and could see "an orange glow".

Ngaruawahia has been in the news recently as the Tribal Huk gang lead by Jamie Pink has been attempting to rid the town of P dealers.

Pink spent the weekend in mental health care after being arrested on gun charges.
