A labourer who allegedly failed to stop, hurled a pie out a car window and led police on a five-hour chase has appeared in the Whangarei District Court.

No pleas were taken when Dane Allison, 23, of Matapouri, appeared yesterday on charges of failing to stop, failing to remain stopped, driving recklessly, assaulting police, and assaulting police using a vehicle as a weapon.

He was remanded in custody until Wednesday next week.

Allison allegedly led police on a chase along SH14 towards Dargaville and at one stage pretended to pull over and tried to reverse into an officer's car several times.

He allegedly hurled a pie out the window of the car he was driving.

Earlier, Inspector Al Symonds said the search began after a pursuit about 8.30am on Wednesday after a motorist failed to pull over for an officer.

Mr Symonds alleged the driver threw a pie out the window, led police down State Highway 14 towards Dargaville and pretended to pull over and then tried to reverse into an officer's car several times.
