A man has been seriously injured in a boiler explosion at a Waikato sawmill this morning.

Emergency services were called to the Max Birt Sawmill in Mangatawhiri, off State Highway 2.

The man was in a serious condition and has been taken to Middlemore Hospital.

Emergency services were called just after 6.30am.

Owner of the sawmill Max Birt said a kiln operator had a small burn to his right leg but believed "absolutely nothing" was going on.

"The fire brigade were incorrectly called."
