Police have recovered the body of a man who has died after falling from a ridge line on the West Coast last night.

Police said the man, who had been on a hunting trip with a friend, slipped from the ridge line on Gunn Ridge Track near Whataroa.

He was killed in the fall, a statement said.

"His partner went for assistance and was rescued by police.''

The dead man's friend is now being supported by Victim Support.

Police said further details, including the man's name, will be released once formal identification has taken place, and extended their sympathies to the man's family and friends.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
