Police commissioner Mike Bush has acknowledged the efforts of the Whitianga community and his police staff in the four-day long search for missing Auckland man Luke Cochrane.
The 19-year-old was last seen leaving the Whitianga Fire Station about 10.30pm on Saturday, sparking a search and rescue operation.
His body was eventually found in a waterway off Aquila Dr, just a few hundred metres from the fire station.
In his weekly blog post released today, Bush thanked police and the Whitianga community who not only helped search but also offered assistance by donating baking or supplies for the dive squad.
"Sadly, we didn't get the outcome we hoped for, and my condolences go to Lucas' family and friends.
"It was moving to see so many people rallying to help, including offering assistance and support to relatives."
Bush also thanked the Waikato policing team led by Eastern Waikato area commander Inspector John Kelly as well as the national dive squad.
"Our staff often work in extremely demanding conditions and don't always get the public recognition they deserve."
