NZ Police media have apologised to the family of a man they declared deceased but who had actually suffered critical injuries.

The man is in Southland Hospital with critical head injuries following a crash in Wallacetown this morning.

Unfortunately initial information indicated that the man was deceased, police media said in a statement.

"Police apologise for the error and the distress caused to the man's family by the release of the erroneous information."
