A man with a tomahawk held up a petrol station in Gisborne overnight.

Police said a man armed with a small axe took a small amount of cash from the Wainui Rd Mobil station.

He demanded money and cigarettes from the attendant while a second person kept watch outside.

Police said the men fled on foot and were tracked by a police dog. Two men were due to appear in Gisborne District Court today on aggravated robbery charges.
