A house has been destroyed by fire in Gore overnight.

The Fire Service said no one was at home when fire took hold of the property on Wolsley St at 2.30am.

A spokesman said firefighters at the Gore station could see the flames leaping into the air several blocks away.

Two crews from Mataura and Gore battled the blaze.

The spokesman said a crew remained at the scene dampening down flare-ups.

A fire safety investigator would be heading to the scene today to determine the cause of the blaze.
