A man is safe and well after becoming stranded in the middle of a river on a quad bike this evening.

All three emergency services - police, fire and St John - were called to the river off North Manakau Rd, between Levin and Otaki, shortly after 8pm, a St John spokesman said.

However, they were stood down after the man was convinced by a family member to abandon his bike in the river and make his way to safety.

He did not require medical treatment.
