A male pedestrian has died after being hit by a logging truck pulling out of a gas station near Nelson.

A police spokesman confirmed a man was hit by a truck in Brightwater, 20km south-west of Nelson, around 3pm yesterday.

Police were told by witnesses the empty logging truck was pulling out of a gas station onto the road when the man was hit.

St John paramedics confirmed a man was transported to Nelson Hospital emergency department yesterday afternoon with critical injuries. Police said the man died in the intensive care unit.

The driver was shaken but unhurt.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
