A man has been arrested after an Armed Offenders Squad call-out in New Plymouth this morning.

Police were called to the house, in Upper Vogeltown, shortly after 6am today after reports of a dispute.

However, police confirmed at about 8.50am that one man from the address had been arrested and was helping police with their inquiries.

The cordons on Carrington St, from the junction with Huatoki St to the roundabout at Tarahua Rd, are being lifted.

Earlier, nearby residents had been urged to stay inside and not leave their houses.

A woman on Carrington St said police rang her home phone and her cellphone and told her not to leave.

She was told to stay away from windows and not to look out. But the woman said she could see a lot of police with guns, as well as police dogs.

She was woken at 6.20 this morning by someone on a megaphone, telling someone to come out with their hands up.

On its Facebook page, Vogeltown School said it was open and it was safe to bring children to school.
