Power is out in Whakamarama after a car hit a power pole this morning.

Western Bay of Plenty head of road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said power lines were down across Whakamarama Rd following a one-car crash about 7.50am.

Mr Campion said the bottom end of Whakamarama Rd was closed and traffic should use the alternative route through Youngson Rd.

He was not aware of any injuries.

Powerco's online power cuts register shows 622 properties in Whakamarama were without power. Estimated restoration time was 12pm.
