A 23-year-old Australian visitor holidaying in Queenstown is missing after wandering off from his group of friends.

Police are searching for Daniel Perry, who was with friends in the Gibbston Valley this afternoon and was last seen near the Gibbston Tavern around 4:00pm.

Perry has shoulder-length ginger hair and blue eyes.

He is wearing black denim jeans with ripped knees, and a brown jacket with a yellow and black striped T-shirt underneath.

He has been known to hitchhike and it is possible he may have done so again this afternoon and been picked up on State Highway 6, Gibbston Highway, police said.

Police asked anyone who may know his whereabouts to call Queenstown Police on (03) 441 1600 or the Southern District Command Centre on (03) 471 5002.
