Police in Northland are still hunting a man who stabbed another man in the stomach, after earlier trying to break into a car in Kaitaia.
Authorities said this afternoon the 22-year-old victim remains in a serious but stable condition in Whangarei Hospital.
Witnesses have told police the attacker had earlier attempted to break into a vehicle in Kaitaia township.
"Members of the public have intervened and the male has then left the scene," a statement said.
The attacker was then spotted on nearby Matthews Ave, where he stabbed the victim about 2.15pm.
Police were still working to understand the circumstances behind the incident. Officers only confirmed that, at this stage, the victim and attacker are not thought to be known to each other.
A scene examination has been taken place and witnesses have spoken to officers.
However, police are still urging members of the public who may have seen the attack or any other suspicious behaviour in the area to come forward.
