Speed and alcohol could have played a role in a horror double fatal crash outside Christchurch.

Emergency services were called to Empire Rd in Kainga, near the Old Waimakariri bridge on the northern outskirts of Christchurch at 3.33pm on Friday.

Police believe that a Toyota Corolla collided with a Downer truck-and-trailer unit, causing its trailer to hit a cyclist.

The 60-year-old male cyclist and 47-year-old Corolla male driver died at the scene despite efforts of St John paramedics.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash. They are yet to formally release the names of the two dead men.
