A woman in her 40s has suffered multiple bite wounds after being attacked by a dog in Hunterville, in the Rangitikei district.

She was stabilised by St John paramedics before being flown to Palmerston North Hospital via rescue helicopter.

Night vision goggles were used during the rescue, a spokesperson said.

The woman suffered moderate injuries to her leg and was taken into surgery.

A police spokeswoman said the incident occurred near Murimotu Rd and Kotukutuku Rd in Hunterville and the dog had been destroyed.

A resident on Murimotu Rd who didn't want to be named, said the area was rural and many people owned working dogs.

Her husband had a team of 10 dogs, she said.
