An elderly man killed in a multiple car crash in Dome Valley this week has been named as James Eoin Gillespie.

The 86-year-old, of North Shore, was the driver of one of three vehicles involved in the crash on Tuesday, just after 4.30pm.

Mr Gillespie died at the scene.

A woman in her 80s, a passenger in Mr Gillespie's car, was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition. She is in now in a stable condition.

The driver of the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was treated at a medical centre in Wellsford.

The driver of the third vehicle was uninjured, police said.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash.
