A 19-year-old whose car went head-on into a power pole in Waikato early this morning, is now in a stable condition.

He suffered a serious head injury when his car came off State Highway One at Lichfield just after 4am. He was cut out of his car by firefighters and ambulance.

Police say the driver is from Tokoroa.

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the crash, involving just the single car.

He's being monitored at the Intensive Care Unit at Waikato Hospital.

Police, fire and ambulance staff worked at the scene to secure the downed wires and free the driver.

Traffic was diverted while the road was blocked.
