One person is dead after a crash near the Burnham military camp in Canterbury.
Police said the driver, the car's sole occupant, was thrown from the vehicle in the crash on Two Chain Rd.
The northbound vehicle appeared to have lost control after coming into contact with the soft shoulder of the road, police said.
The vehicle rolled and came to rest on the opposite side of the road.
Police said the scene was being examined by the serious crash unit and the road would remain closed while that was underway.
In a separate incident, a man has critical head injuries after a car crash on State Highway 1, north of Taupo.
He was taken to Tokoroa by ambulance, where he was collected by the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter and flown to Waikato Hospital.
Another patient from the crash was taken by road to Tokoroa Hospital with multiple injuries.
Bad weather prevented the helicopter from flying to the scene.
