A man is still in critical condition after driving into a power pole in North Canterbury last night.

He smashed into a power pole on South Eyre Rd, in Oxford about 10pm and became trapped.

A Fire Service spokesman said they had to free the man from his car.

St John Ambulance rushed the man to Christchurch Hospital for treatment.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman said the man remained in critical condition this morning.
