One person has been killed in a crash near Whakatane this morning.

St John attended the crash at 8.30am. Six patients were treated and taken to Whakatane Hospital.

One person died, four had moderate injuries and one had minor injuries in the crash between a car and a van on Thornton Rd.

The road was blocked and diversions were in place at the intersections of State Highway 30 and Thornton Rd, and between Thornton Rd and East Bank Rd.

Police are asking people to avoid the area where possible and have patience if there were any delays.
