A man who tried to break up a fight between three dogs copped a bite on the hand and a trip to hospital in a rescue helicopter for his troubles.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter picked the man up from a farm in Whitianga at 7.30pm this evening.

A rescue helicopter spokesman said the man, who is in his 30s, had "reasonably deep wounds" to his hands as a result of trying to defuse the rumble between the three dogs.

He was airlifted to Waikato Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
